BOSTON COMMON

Ask any local what is the quintessential Boston experience and most will agree on a
visit to Boston Common. It encompasses everything that best describes the city itself.
A 48-acre public ground, people of any nationality can be seen in the park every day.
Like the city is has a long history. Established in 1634, it is the oldest public park in
the country. It forms park of the Freedom Trail and symbols of Boston's history can
be found around the park. You can visit the Central Burying Ground, a graveyard
containing remains of many American and British soldiers from the War of
Independence or the George Washington Statue. Children will enjoy the famous duck
sculptures based on a classic children's story, written by Robert McCloskey.
Directly adjacent to the common is the Public Garden. This is a more formal area and
features English garden-style flower beds and a lagoon. Also a favourite are the Swan
Boats, which can be used to travel across the Public Garden Lake.
Winter or summer there is always something new to enjoy here. In winter, the Frog
Pond becomes an ice rink. In summer, open-air concerts and Shakespearean plays are
performed. Or why not simply take in the beautiful surroundings and people watch?
An oasis within the city!
