Though often grouped with Boston itself, Cambridge is an independent town on its outskirts. It is dominated by two colleges, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Harvard, one of America's foremost universities. The area is characterised by its trendy shops, bookstores and cafes and has the unmistakable buzz of a college town. Harvard has a beautiful campus and is worth taking a leisurely stroll through. The university also has a number of museums specialising in its areas of teaching. Originally conceived as an educational support to the students attending the university, the public can now appreciate the expertise these museums display. Particularly good is the Fogg Art and Busch-Reisinger Museum and the Sackler Museum of art. Probably most popular, though, is the Harvard Museum of Natural History. This encompasses 3 museums in one, covering geology, zoology and botany. Every New England gem type and rock is displayed here as is a collection of dinosaur skeletons. The museum is located at 26 Oxford Street. Admission is great value with adult tickets costing $7.50 and child's costing $5. Don't forget that tickets can also be used for admission to the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology. If your visiting times are flexible a handy tip is that admission is free on Wednesdays from 3 pm to 5pm (from September to May) and year-round on Sundays from 9 am to 12 pm. |
