SHOPPING

No trip to Boston would be complete without a stop at Filene's. This is a major
department store located in the heart of Boston which features all the well-known
brands. It is most famous, though, for its basement, a discount store in itself with
genuine bargains. For the big designer names such as DKNY and Chanel try Newbury
Street which contains all the exclusive names. There are also plenty of smaller shops
and boutiques to explore particularly in nearby Cambridge. If Boston has one
shopping speciality, though, it is probably its bookstores. It has all the major book
chains as well as scores and scores of independent, more quirky shops. Most Boston
stores open from 9 am until 6 pm and many open late on Thursdays. Please note, if
buying clothing, that there is a 5% tax added on items priced higher than $175.
