On 28 October, 2004, Boston cheers could be heard around the country! Against all odds and after 86 seasons, its home baseball team, the Boston Red Sox, won the World Series. Boston has always had a love affair with sport and, particularly, with the Red Sox. The team was bought in 1904 and was called at various times the Puritans, Pilgrims and Plymouth Rocks, finally becoming the Red Sox in 1907. It was on April 20th, 1912 that Fenway Park became the team's home ground. At various times baseball greats have played in the park including Babe Ruth, Jimmie Foxx and Joe Cronin. Many would say that the team's fortunes changed with the signing of superstar player, Manny Ramirez in 2001. If you are visiting Boston between the months of April and September you should try to catch a Red Sox game at the park. Or you could take in a tour of the stadium itself. There, you will learn about its history and see its press box, the hall of fame and the legendary left field wall known as the Green Monster. Tours leave from the Red Sox souvenir store daily from 9 am to 4 pm on the hour. Tickets are $10 for adults, $9 for seniors and $8 for children aged 14 and younger. A great way to experience an integral part of Bostonian life. |
