Boston is closely associated with the American War of Independence. The Boston Tea Party was the event which kick-started Patriot rebellion and many landmarks associated with the war are located in Boston. These can be visited by following a walking tour called The Freedom Trail. Probably the most important stop is Bunker Hill where the first major battle was fought between colonists and the English army. Today a monument stands in memory to those who lost their lives. Other highlights include the Massachusetts State House, built once independence was won, and still in use today. A statue of Benjamin Franklin, best known as the signer of the Declaration of Independence and the Peace Treaty with Great Britain, also stands in the courtyard of Boston's Old City Hall. The Freedom Trail begins in Boston Common and you can pick up maps there that guide you through all the stops on the Trail which stretches across the town, from the Common to North End and eventually, Charlestown. One of the great things about this tour is that it is self-guided, the information is at your finger tips and you can take it at your own pace. It should take a good part of a morning or afternoon to complete it but take your time and enjoy your various stops. This is a good thing to do on your first or second day in Boston. It takes in so much that it is a great introduction to the city and allows you to get your bearings. |
